Lucy the Artist

From an early age I enjoyed art and crafts and would spend hours creating my first masterpieces. By the time I was at secondary school I knew I wanted to follow a career in art, so on completing my G.C.S.E's I left school to study art and design specialising in textiles, I then went to university to do constructed textiles degree where I specialised in woven tapestry.

On completion of my degree I took my art into two areas, I further developed my art practice, but also began running workshops for children.

I have exhibited in various exhibitions, my last one being in 2004. I have also produced work for private commission.

In recent years since having children my work has focused more on printing and card making, I have produced stationary for weddings and Christmas cards.

Having spent some of my childhood in Turkey and Indonesia I often think the inspiration for my art does not come from someone but from growing up with influences from textiles, turkey with it's kiln rugs and Indonesia with it's batik. Once at college and university it became a natural progression to follow textiles.

Although I enjoy using lots of different textile processes and materials to produce my work, my biggest interest lies with woven tapestry.

Having specialised in woven tapestry at university my exhibition work has always been tapestries, a woven process and technique that hasn't changed for hundreds of years. I have enjoyed exploring the limits of producing the fabrics, but using new materials to produce my work rather than traditional wool and cottons. While at university I started to use nylon thread to weave my work with my inspiration being fish and water, therefore looking at how light illuminates water and it's inhabitants. This is a process and interest that I continue to develop, nature and the natural being my main source of inspiration.
